Mentoring & Support
With a Neurodivergent Approach

Why mentoring?
At times, our youth struggle to connect with traditional therapeutic methods. They may not resonate with their psychologist's techniques or their occupational therapist's strategies. Often, what they need most is support and guidance from someone who truly understands their experiences.

As parents, we recognize that sometimes the same advice, when delivered by someone else, can carry a different and more impactful weight.

Reflecting on my own youth, I remember feeling judged rather than understood by those trying to help me. The in-school support and therapy sessions only made me feel more alienated. I rejected it all because I didn't want to feel different.

It had to come from the guidance of a friend, not an authority, that I felt related to my struggles. That didn't just tell me how I'm suppose to do it, but understood how hard it was for me to do it. Someone that had failed just as many times as I had, and could show me that failing was ok while showing me how they overcame it.

It's easy to say, "you're not alone," and that there are others out there going through what you're experiencing. But it's another thing to FEEL that you aren't alone.

I'm not just diagnosed autistic and ADHD, I also take ADHD medication daily and melatonin every night just to ensure I get some sleep. I can also get sensory overload from smells, I carry ear plugs for the overwhelming noises out in public.
I have my safe foods and super special interests.
I get exactly where they are coming from.

In the words of one child, "You also have ADHD. You get it."
What it's like to have ADHD Explained by a Diagnosed ADHD & ODD Child
This interview was done with a long time client of mine.
Having worked on identifying what our body is telling us, and WHY it's telling us, so that we are better prepared to navigate strategies around what we are experiencing and effectively portray our needs and find solutions to our struggles.
It doesn't make it a cure.
As he'll tell you. Impulses still win.
As it's not often that a child, let alone an adult can be so self aware of their nervous system, their deficits and how they feel inside.
The hope was that with a child explaining.
It may carry more impact from a child than an adult for those still looking for deeper understanding and empathy.
